The Community Farm at Chestnut Ridge is seeking a full-time Farm Manager/Educator.
Farm Manager/Educator Position Description
The primary tasks of the Farm Manager/Educator at The Community Farm at Chestnut Ridge are:
- providing written curriculum for the Community Farm
- teaching youth and adults regarding sustainable agricultural practices and their connection to Christian discipleship
- networking with other community organizations to encourage participation that reflects the economic, educational, social and racial diversity of the geographical area
- writing articles for local and national press
In addition, the Farm Manager/Educator is responsible for short and long term farm planning, including both crops and animals, garnering support from volunteers, resourcing materials and labor to execute farm activities, developing theological resources to articulate the connections between the practices of sustainable farming and Christian discipleship and disseminating these resources/practices to a wider audience through written materials, experiential workshops and seminars, and speaking engagements in the wider community.
Position Specifics
More specifically, the Farm Manager/Educator will:
- select and tend animals and monitor their health and welfare using humane practices throughout their lives
- sow and reap high quality crops/li>
- plan strategies for maximum yield while protecting the environment and maintaining biodiversity
- maintain a knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of sustainable practices in response
- ensure farm practices comply with government regulations
- organize and administrate daily and seasonal farm care
- order and care for farm equipment
- arrange for maintenance and repair of farm buildings and equipment
- cultivate a volunteer base and partnership with individuals, local churches and other like-minded organizations
- develop a teaching curriculum around the practices of sustainable farming appropriate for experiential education for children, youth, and adults, that invites theological reflection and practical experiences
- plan and promote learning experiences for volunteers and mentoring relationships for interested persons
- teach sustainable farming practices to persons of all ages
- publish articles about the practices at The Community Farm in quarterly newsletters, on the website, and in selected magazines, journals and news media
Experience in sustainable farming with both livestock and crops, teaching and writing experience, and higher education in agriculture and/or theology is desirable. On the job training is available by networking with The Farm Task Force at Chestnut Ridge, which consists of experienced area farmers, Cooperative Extension agents, and theologians who will provide instruction, resources connections and oversight.
