BU District Confirmation Retreat: An Experience of Christian Community & Learning PDF Print E-mail
Written by Rhonda Parker

On Feb. 29-March 2, confirmands from the Burlington District and beyond gathered at Chestnut Ridge Camp & Retreat Center to immerse themselves in community, worship, play and conversation. Our unique United Methodist connection was powerfully visible as 52 youth gathered from First UMC Elon, Hebron, Leasburg, Resurrection (Durham), Davis Street, Cedar Grove, Orange Chapel, Wake Forest, and Center.

During the weekend, they were blessed with gifted keynote speakers: Rev. Dr. Gayle Felton, who spoke on the meaning of Baptism and Holy Communion; Rev. Dr. Belton Joyner, who talked about John Wesley and our distinctive United Methodist beliefs; and Rev. Lisa Yebuah, who spoke on Jesus’ challenging question to the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?”

Rev. Ken Hall and Rev. Jan Thornton-Irvine led a workshop on the Bible and Christian service, and Rev. Yebuah led a workshop on worship, which included topics such as liturgy and prayer.  Rev. Rhonda Parker and the staff of Chestnut Ridge offered ice-breakers and other activities as well as delicious meals.  Rev. Duane Partin led worship music.

Between games, talks, worship, late night snacks and s'mores, confirmands found friendship and an experience of God's presence in and among the gathered community. "The best part is being outside," said one confirmand as she sat by the campfire.  Confirmands enjoyed the camp’s activities such as canoeing, tree climbing, working in the garden, playing basketball, and taking hayrides.

This was a really fun retreat. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to come and experience meeting new people and just having fun. I think that all of the outdoor activities were very fun and the food was excellent. The speakers were all very great and if you listened, you would learn...thanks for the opportunity. -Tammy from Hebron UMC

On Sunday morning, the group celebrated a closing commissioning service and Holy Communion by the lakeside with the Rev. Bill Gattis (Burlington District Superintendent) giving the morning message.

The confirmands left with a deeper understanding of what it means to bear the name "Christian" to the world.  May God continue to bless them on their journey!
