As a center serving over 27,000 meals each year, we have ample opportunities to model practices that offer ways to live sustainably and thoughtfully! The construction and implementation of a vermiposting project is part of our mission to teach and model responsible care for the environment. To that end, the bins will be visibly located in our center’s garden which is cared for by community volunteers, campers, and students. Students from Orange, Durham, Person, Chatham, Caswell, Alamance, and Wake counties, in particular, will benefit from the addition of vermiposting as they spend time at Chestnut Ridge on school field trips. Vermiposting tangibly makes good use of our food scraps and enhances the quality of the garden’s soil, demonstrating a practice which offers hope for a sustainable future. In a world where children and youth are especially sensitive to weighty messages of environmental destruction and degradation, practices like gardening, composting and vermiposting offer a much appreciated and needed voice of hope and empowerment. The grant will be awarded at Weaver Street's Annual Meeting on October 18th at the Carrboro Century Center.
